Ruth & Michael's Summer Wedding at the Great Tythe Barn, Tetbury
The Great Tythe Barn in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, is a venue I've photographed at many times over the years. Set in the Cotswolds, it's a lovely setting for a wedding, with plenty of space for guests to enjoy the grounds and celebrate together. I'm also fortunate to be one of the venue's recommended wedding photographers.
Ruth and Michael chose the Great Tythe Barn for their summer wedding, and with beautiful weather throughout the day, they couldn't have asked for much better conditions to celebrate with their family and friends.
Getting Ready at the Great Tythe Barn
I arrived around two hours before the ceremony, giving me plenty of time to photograph the preparations as they unfolded. Both Ruth and Michael got ready on site, which meant I could move between them and capture the quieter moments before the wedding.
Their ceremony took place in the main barn, followed by confetti outside and an afternoon of drinks, canapés and garden games in the summer sunshine.
Natural Wedding Photography in the Cotswolds
One of the things I enjoy about photographing weddings at the Great Tythe Barn is the variety of opportunities throughout the day.
With the sun shining, I chose a shaded area for Ruth and Michael's family photographs. Strong sunlight can create harsh shadows and leave people squinting, so finding somewhere with soft, even light makes a real difference. It's a small consideration, but one that helps keep the photographs natural and flattering.
I also took Ruth and Michael away for a few couple portraits before the wedding breakfast. I often recommend doing this while guests are finding their seats. It gives the couple a few minutes together and means we've already captured some lovely photographs if they'd rather spend the rest of the evening with their guests.
Saxophone, Sunshine and an Evening of Dancing
After the wedding breakfast and speeches, Ruth and Michael were happy to head outside again for a few more photographs.
Meanwhile, the celebrations were getting into full swing. With the evening sun still shining, saxophonist AndronSax provided the music as guests gathered outside, dancing, singing along and making the most of the beautiful weather. There was a brilliant atmosphere, and it was one of those moments where everyone was simply enjoying themselves.
These are some of my favourite parts of a wedding to photograph. Nothing needs organising or directing. I can just move amongst the guests and capture what's happening naturally.
As the evening continued, I photographed Ruth and Michael's first dance and the start of the evening celebrations.
For me, that's what wedding photography is about, a mixture of the important moments, the little things happening in between and the people who make the day what it is.
